Ask The Pastor (Session 4)
“Is Marijuana Use a Sin? Why Did Paul Want to Go to Rome? Who Were the Nicolaitans?”
In this eye-opening session of Ask The Pastor, Pastor Harris tackled three spiritually significant and thought-provoking questions with biblical clarity and pastoral care.
1. Is it a sin to use marijuana if it’s purchased legally from a dispensary?
Pastor Harris addressed this contemporary question with both scriptural insight and spiritual wisdom. While Scripture does not explicitly mention cannabis, Pastor Harris emphasized three guiding principles:
– Was it obtained legally? (Romans 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13-17)
– Is it being used in moderation or for medicinal purposes? (1 Corinthians 6:12; Ephesians 5:18; 1 Peter 5:8)
– Does your usage cause others to stumble in their walk with Christ? (1 Corinthians 8:9-13; Matthew 18:6-9; Romans 14:21)
The answer, ultimately, is not rooted in legality alone, but in intention, stewardship, and how our actions affect others spiritually.
2. Why was Paul so determined to go to Rome?
Paul’s passionate desire to reach Rome was rooted in purpose and strategy. He longed to:
– Preach the Gospel in the heart of the Roman Empire (Acts 19:21; 23:11; 27:23-24; 28:16-30)
– Strengthen and encourage the early Roman church
– Position the Gospel in a key location of influence and outreach
3. Who were the Nicolaitans in the Bible?
Referencing Revelation 2:6 and 2:15, Pastor Harris explained that the Nicolaitans were a group whose teachings and practices promoted moral compromise, particularly in areas of idolatry and sexual immorality. Their influence was strongly rebuked by Christ, who commended the church at Ephesus for rejecting their doctrine. Their example serves as a timeless warning against blending faith with cultural corruption.
This session reminded us that God’s Word is both timely and timeless—and that even today’s toughest questions can be met with spiritual truth, biblical integrity, and loving guidance.
